How Would Jesus Do Children's/Youth Ministry?

Did you know that over 10% of Kansas foster children are from Shawnee County? That is almost 700 foster children in Shawnee county alone! Chances are that some of those foster children have attended, are attending, or will attend your church activities. What an awesome opportunity to help local children move through the darkness of childhood trauma and into the light and love that is Jesus!

Is your church equipped to help children from hard places handle your church activities?  Encourage your children/youth ministry staff and volunteers to join us as we learn how childhood trauma impacts the brain, strategies to circumvent trauma behaviors, and tools to love trauma-impacted children in our church settings.

Kat Meinhardt

Kat Meinhardt

LBSW, foster/adoptive mom, TBRI educator/practitioner

Kathryn “Kat” Meinhardt is a licensed social worker (LBSW), foster/adoptive mom, TBRI® Educator/Practitioner, and trained TiPS-MAPP/Deciding Together and NTDC leader. She has been in and around various aspects of child welfare for about 20 years including work as a former investigative social worker for then SRS (DCF).

When Kathryn became a foster parent in 2012, she had a very primitive and basic understanding of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) and decided she did not want to parent children on the spectrum at that time. However, within six months of being placed with her, three of her children were diagnosed with full FAS with characteristics in the severe categories. Through that, she became a local “expert” by necessity and has given numerous trainings across Kansas and Missouri in numerous settings including child welfare agencies, schools, churches, and community groups.

Kathryn loves and enjoys helping families come to a place of hope and healing and is always willing to share her knowledge. She understands many aspects of parenting biological, foster, and adopted children and the trauma and healing needed for the entire family. She currently resides on a small homestead in the Topeka area with her husband. They currently share life with eleven children and a menagerie of farm animals.

Greg Lombard Rea

Greg Lombard Rea

Adoptive dad, TBRI practitioner, Post/adoption support specialist

Greg Lombard Rea is a TBRI Practitioner, father of 2 daughters and 2 adopted children, Post-Adoption support specialist, and former pastor. As his younger children entered teenage years and his family navigated through a cancer diagnosis and later, a devastating loss, managing the behavior of children from trauma became more than the family could handle.

Everything changed when he discovered why the behaviors had gotten so difficult; and that “traditional parenting doesn’t work with kids from trauma.” Greg immersed himself in learning and practicing Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI). He learned that early trauma, abuse, neglect and abandonment disrupts the normal trajectory of brain and attachment development. Through TBRI, he found the principles and strategies needed to promote the healing of his children.

When Greg began work at the Kansas Post Adoption Resource Center with Kansas Children’s Service League, he was able to use his trauma training and connect with and train over 400 adoptive, kinship and foster families. He began AdoptionFriend.com so he could continue to bring compassion, connection and resources to adoptive and kinship families. Through this platform, Greg provides coaching and resources for families to promote healing in trauma-impacted children.

Northwest Kansas

TBRI for Foster Parents Empowering Principles.

Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) is a holistic approach that is multi-disciplinary, flexible, attachement-centered, and challenging. TBRI consists of three sets of harmonious principles: Connecting, Empowering, and Correcting Principles.

The TBRI Empowering Principles are designed to facilitate change in children by supporting their physical needs and teaching them self-regulation skills. Self-regulation skills, managing behavior and emotions are important for children’s success in the classroom, with peers, and in interactions with adults.

This training will help foster/adoptive parents understand the TBRI Empowering Principles and how to apply them in their home.

This training is free but RSVP is required to ensure enough supplies.
